Wild Elephant successfully relocated to ATR from Human-Wildlife conflict area in Coimbatore

Chenna, Nov 14 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Forests department has successfully and
safely relocated a wild elephant from a human–wildlife conflict zone in Coimbatore
to the secure and natural refuge of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR).
The move followed a meticulously planned, science-based operation carried out
by the Coimbatore Forest Division.
At the Varakazhiyar Elephant Camp, the elephant was cared for with sensitivity,
minimal disturbance, and constant supervision.
Throughout its controlled stay under the soft-release protocol right from daily observation
and calm handling to radio-collaring and health assessments every stage was overseen
with great care by the local team led by the Field Director, supported by DFOs, Rangers,
experienced Mahouts, and expert veterinarians, Forest department officials said.
Fitted with a radio collar, an essential conservation tool that helps ensure its continued
protection, the elephant was then transported to the ATR. The relocation took place on
November 12 in a quiet, undisturbed stretch of the forest.
The chosen site offers rich natural forage and abundant water sources, making it an ideal
habitat.
As it stepped into the forest, the elephant began calmly grazing and slowly made its way
deeper into the woods with a herd of elephants.
A dedicated team of six trained forest personnel have been assigned to monitor the
movement patterns of the elephant.
